Improve Your Memory,
Scout with a Digital Camera
I never walk into the forest without a digital camera. If I can't hunt with a bow or rifle,
a camera is my favorite weapon. Many of my friends will never look down the sights at
6x6 bull just before they squeeze the release trigger. And there is no real way to describe the
feeling you get when you see a large game animal up close, but like they say,
"A picture is worth a thousand words." So always take a camera when scouting during the spring
and early summer.
Do some scouting in the spring. You will be surprised at the number of animals you will see
because they are not expecting you to be there until September. You can almost hear them thinking.
Holy Cow! Hunters. What are they doing here?
These mule deer were very suprised to see me scouting in April.
These elk were surprised to see me in August.
These bulls didn't care about anything but kicking each other's butt.
Cameras are also great for recording evidence. Fresh droppings, fresh tracks, fresh bedding
areas. The cool thing is that they can really help you refresh your memory when filling out
scouting reports
on your scouting trips.
If nothing else, you will at least get some last second shots of the bear or
mountain lion right before he eats you. hehehe. Just kidding.
Many times I will find some amazing views while hiking through the woods. Hard to describe the view
of the sun setting or the view looking down the red rock canyons of Sedona, or the way the sunlight hits a stand of yellow-leafed
oak trees in the fall.
