Talk to Arizona Game & Fish
Wildlife Hunt Unit Managers
There is no one who is the woods more than an Arizona Game & Fish Hunt Unit Manager. These
wildlife management professionals spend an amazing amount of time in the woods. And when they are
not in the woods, many times they are flying overhead in an airplane conducting aerial surveys, performing
headcounts and collecting radio collar animal travel statistics, which tell them exactly where big game animals
eat, drink and sleep on a daily basis.
These guys and gals are worth their weight in gold for the hunting knowledge they possess.
You might
wonder, what is the best way to approach these professionals to get some honest feedback on where your
big game herd might be located.
I try to put myself in their shoes. Let us say that a game unit manager
gets 20 calls in a given day before the hunting season. As a game unit manager, would you prefer to help
someone who has been out driving the roads, scouting
the tanks and looking for fresh sign on the game trails, or someone who just asks where can I find an elk
or deer to shoot on opening day?
Knowing a little bit about the area and simply stating that you have been
scouting and haven't had much luck will probably get you a lot further than just saying, "Where can I find them?"
Another thing to remember is that these guy's primary office is their pickup truck, not an office with
a telephone and computer. So if it takes them a couple of days to get back to you, please be patient and give
them a chance to get back in the office and contact you
before getting upset.
With that said, calling the day before hunting season starts, probably isn't the best
way to get a quick call back.
