Scouting Game Trail Hubs
on Topographic Hunting Maps
When numerous game trails extend like spokes on a wheel throughout a heavily traveled area, the area is
commonly called a converging hub. It is a looser choke point than a true funnel and is perfect for a hunter
armed with a rifle.
In the hills, several ridges coming together typically form a converging hub. On flat land, several small streams
converging in one location will form a great hub of big game activity. Hubs are excellent places to see deer
movement throughout the entire year.
Many times converging hubs are located beneath groves of favored oak trees and apple orchards. These areas
make prime locations for three stands due to the heavy traffic of elk and deer and can be dynamite places to hunt.
In this topo map, you can see multiple saddles that funnel six different trails in the same central area.
Add to that, there is an abundance of water in this area and plenty of grass to eat in the river bottoms.
A great place to sit and wait for animals to come prancing down one or more trails at the same time.
